Scafell Pike, UK

Scafell Pike is England tallest mountain, standing at 964 meters. It is located in the North-East of England in a National Park called The Lake District. It's a hugely popular trail, with approximately 250,000 people walk it every year.

With it being so tall, most times at a the top it is in a cloud, preventing the hikers from seeing the views, however the sights on the way up are outstanding (photos shown below).

For the largest part of the walk, it a slightly steep rocky and gravel footpath and then towards the end it is a large incline with loose rocks. At those points its likely you will have to scramble, although not for so long.

If you take the usual route up Scafell (which is the most popular so will encounter many other hikers) it will take you past four checkpoints before the summit. The photo to the left was taken at the first checkpoint. At the point you will cross a wide river - not too deep but it is a fun experience.

The footpath is more or less like this for the majority of the walk and it is comfortable to come up on and down on, as seen the the photo it is great for dogs. It is uncommon that you will come across, but that depends on then you go due to there are busier times than others. Below is a table for when is is busiest.

Planning information

Just as Scafell Pike is a beautiful walk, it is hard as well. It is England's tallest mountain and has sections of trail where it is challenging. Knowing this, it is in anyone's best interest to be prepared at have planned for it.

Routes

There are three main routes up Scafell (there are definitely more but are as well documented or taken), which are:

-Wasdale head

-Borrowdale (from Seathwaite)

-Great Langdale

The route I took to reach Scafell's summit was Wasdale head. I recommend this route as it is the shortest and the quickest. It also provides fantastic views along the way. It usually take around 6-7 hours to complete, however I did it in 4.

However, just because I recommend a certain route, does not mean the others are bad, its simply because I prefer Wasdale Head.
